Osteoarthritis (OA) is caused by aging, injury, and obesity. Joint pain and stiffness are the major symptoms. Treatment depends on the affected joint, including the hand, wrist, neck, back, knee, and hip, and involves medication and exercise. In cases of overweight, weight loss may improve osteoarthritic symptoms.

Causes

Some of the following factors might cause osteoarthritis

  • Being overweight
  • Getting older
  • Joint injury
  • Joints that are not properly formed
  • A genetic defect in joint cartilage
  • Stresses on the joints from certain jobs and playing sports

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected joints after repetitive use.
  • Joint pain is usually worse later in the day.
  • Swelling, warmth, and creaking of the affected joints.
  • Pain and stiffness of the joints can also occur after long periods of inactivity, for example, sitting in a theater.
  • Complete loss of cartilage causes friction between bones, causing pain at rest or pain with limited motion.

Do’s and don’ts

  • Avoiding too much of rest may worsen the problem later when the patient start doing routine.
  • Doing mild exercise will help to avoid stiffness. A physiotherapist may help to suggest the right exercise.
  • Avoiding the exercises that increases the pain.
  • Apply some ointments like Topi MP for soothing effect.
  • Trying a knee brace to wrap around the knee which can be continued if beneficial.
  • Reducing weight by using natural herbs like Phytolacca berry in case of overweight and obesity.
  • Quitting smoking is also found to be helpful.
