Chronic Bronchitis

It is known as inflammation of the lining of bronchial tubes which carries air to and from the lung. Bronchitis may be either acute or chronic. Chronic bronchitis is a more serious condition that develops over time rather than striking suddenly. It’s characterized by recurrent episodes of bronchitis that last for several months or years.


Acute bronchitis is usually caused by viruses, typically the same viruses that cause colds and flu. The most common cause of chronic bronchitis is smoking cigarettes, air pollution and dust or toxic gases in the environment or workplace also can contribute to the condition.


Symptoms of acute bronchitis may include cough, wheezing of chest, fever, chills and malaise, and shortness of breath especially with exertion. There can be production of mucus (sputum), which can be clear, white, yellowish-gray or green in color.


Smoking should be stopped immediately. If patient is in highly polluted region, s/he should wear mask whenever go outside. Breathing in warm, moist air from a humidifier can ease coughs and loosen the mucus. Daily exercise improves lung capacity by strengthening the muscle. Pursed-lip breath can be helpful during breathlessness; patient has to take a deep breath and then slowly breathe out through your mouth. During breathe out, hold the lips as if about to kiss someone.
