Effect of Leonurus cardiaca in arterial hypertension

It is traditionally used as a sedative and is known for its hypotensive and cardiotonic effects. These effects have been systematically studied recently. Clinical studies in patients suffering from arterial hypertension, anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, etc. has been gaining interest. A recent study was done with fifty patients, treated for 28 days. Patients with stage 1 hypertension were observed positive effects within 1st week after administration of drug Leonurus cardiaca on psycho-emotional status and arterial blood pressure, whereas stage 2 hypertension has got positive effect after 1 week. 32% of patients has got marked improvement from depression and anxiety, whereas 48% patients got moderate improvement and weak effect in 8%. 12% of patients did not respond to the drug. Side effects were minimal in all groups. It was concluded from the study that patients suffering from arterial hypertension and concurrent psycho-neurological disorders, Leonurus cardiaca seems to be a potentially effective therapeutic agent for arterial hypertension.
