Dear Readers,

Thanks for your warm welcome and encouraging feedback on our first newsletter. In this issue we have covered an important development in the filed of homoeopathy and other alternative medicines in India. The Department of Ayush has approached the General Insurance Council for looking at the possibility of accepting claims of homoeopathy and other alternative medicines. They made a presentation to the General Insurance Council members, who in turn, have formed a three-member committee to look into the matter. The committee would examine the merits and demerits of the proposal and recommend processes to implement if it is convinced that these types of medicines should also be covered under health insurance. The Insurance Regulatory & Development Authority will take a call on this issue. If implemented, this will have a positive impact on the development of alternative medicines including homoeopathy.

According to another report, President Pratibha Patil has given a call to integrate homoeopathy and other alternative medicines for better healthcare in the country. “In a country like India, it is important to bring medical services within the reach of people from all strata of society. Efforts should be made to integrate modern medicines with that of homoeopathy, ayurveda, siddha and unani,” she said.

Rosa canina is a drug prepared from the wild rose, which’s phytochemicals are found to be rich in vitamin C. A recent proving has given quite number of mental symptoms such as irritability as a result of pity things, and positive attitude. Another key symptom established was ‘cramps’. This symptom is found in many areas like stomach, heart and extremities. The full symptomatology can be found under the section ‘Proving’. It will be useful to homoeopaths in their practice.

Cardiospermum mother tincture is successfully used for eczema and other skin problems, but not so popular among homoeopaths. There have been many studies that prove the efficacy of this drug. A compilation of useful information on this drug as per recent reports and studies is given under ‘Mother Tincture Info’. Effective use of this mother tincture would increase the rate of success in daily practice.

Many drugs in mother tincture and low potencies are useful in managing lifestyle ailments. Due to the maintaining cause, one may need regular intake of such drugs for these problems. Diabetes is one of the fastest increasing disorders in the country and many forecasts suggest that India would become a diabetic capital soon. Syzygium jambolanum is considered at the top for diabetes by homoeopaths. Usually the mother tincture is prescribed in drop doses with little water. As the mother tincture is inconvenient for diabetics to carry all the time, Schwabe has brought this mother tincture in tablet form by using modern technology. Information on this tablet is given under ‘Product Watch’.

There is a breakthrough in the basic homoeopathic research. A group of scientist at IIT, Bombay has demonstrated the presence of nanoparticles of the starting materials and their aggregates at high dilutions of 30c and 200c. It gives hope that we are very close to the cracking of mystery in the high dilutions. Perhaps further replicating and follow up studies on this line would explore more about high dilutions. Another study on effects of homoeopathic medicines on polysomnographic sleep of young adults with histories of coffee-related insomnia is reported. Though it is well known fact by clinical observation, this study has proved that homoeopathic remedies improve quality of sleep by using polysomnography.
