Arthritis is a general term and refers to inflammation of joints. There are more than 100 types. Further, homoeopathic approach calls for comprehensive consideration of the individual’s mental, physical, pathological, lifestyle and other factors. Study of the case is of utmost importance.

 What causes arthritis?

There is no one cause for arthritis. Cause depends on the type or form of arthritis. Potential causes for arthritis may include:

  • Injury – leading to degenerative arthritis
  • Abnormal metabolism – leading to gout and pseudogout
  • Inheritance – such as in osteoarthritis
  • Infections – inflammation due to bacteria, virus, etc.
  • Overactive immune system (autoimmunity) – such as RA and SLE.

Signs and symptoms

  • Onset is usually insidious (proceeding in a gradual, subtle way, but with very harmful effects)
  • Stiffness of the affected joint
  • Then development of pain on motion and palpable crepitus (grating, crackling or popping sounds)
  • Mild joint effusion
  • Mild signs of inflammation may also be noticed.

Do’s and don’ts to help you manage arthritis

  • Some gentle exercise in the evening will help to feel less stiff in the morning.
  • Adjusting/changing posture of sitting
  • Periodically tilting neck from side to side
  • Changing the position of hands
  • Bending and stretching legs
  • Taking breaks to avoid overuse of a single joint and causing more pain
  • Standing and walking around for every half-hour or so

In addition, lifestyle changes are important for easing pain.

  • Managing weight: Being overweight can increase complications of arthritis and contribute to arthritis pain. Making incremental, permanent lifestyle changes resulting in gradual weight loss is often the most effective method of weight management.
  • Quitting smoking: Smoking causes stress on connective tissues, which leads to more arthritis pain.
