The root acts as tonic, laxative, demulcent and emollient. It is considered as a good medicine for cough, sore-throat and genito-urinary diseases. It contains an active drug glycrrhizin, which is considered to be useful in sore-throat and chronic bronchitis. It contains a compound, which is not steroid but acts like corticosteriods in mild form and covers well as anti-inflammatory. It is one of the oldest used medicines and it is used in Chinese medicine as well as Indian medicine.
