Muira Puama M.T.

Botanically it is known as Liriosma ovata. It is native to Brazil’s rain forests especially the Rio Negro and Amazons regions. It is a large tree up to 15m high with a grey trunk, dark brown leaves, white flowers and orange-yellow fruits.

It contains esters, phytosterols and bitters. A homoeopathic tincture is made from the root bark and the wood. It is covered by German Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia. It is used as a tonic and aphrodisiac. It is considered a valuable remedy for impotence. The bitters of the bark have high astringent value and are used as gargles for sore throat. It is also reported to be anti-diarrhoeal and helps in dysentery.
