Botanically it is known as Liriosma ovata. It is native of Brazil rain forests specially the Rio Negro and Amazons regions. It is a large tree upto 15m high with grey trunk, dark brown leaves, white flowers and orange yellow fruits.

It contains esters, phyto-sterols and bitters.A homoeopathic tincture is made from the root bark and the wood. It is covered by German Homoeopathic Pharmacopoeia. It is used as a tonic and aphrodisiac. It is considered as a valuable remedy for impotence. The bitters of the bark have high astringent value and are used as gargle for sore throat. It is also reported to be anti-diarrhoeal and helps in dysentery.

A study conducted at the Institute of Sexology in Paris, 62% of men who took Muira puama extract noted an increase in sex drive and 51% of participants reported an increased ability to produce an erection.1
