10 Helpful tips to deal with winter acne

Winter is the season when people face many challenges physically and mentally. The cold weather and lack of sunlight is the main reason for such problems. One such condition is skin problems especially acne. During winter the skin becomes dry, devoid of oil and moisture. When the weather is cold, there is less moisture in the environment, the cold air sucks out the skin’s moisture and is unable to fight bacteria and infection. This leads to skin problems such as acne.

Causes of winter acne

The main reason for the acne problem in winter is that the pores in the skin get clogged with sebum which is secreted by the sebaceous glands of the skin. Sebum is an oily secretion which helps to keep the skin moist and supple. During winter these secretions get dried up and obstruct the pores leading to infection and inflammation and hence the pimples. They mainly affect the forehead, nose and chin which are rich in these sebaceous glands.

Sunlight is essential for good health especially the skin as it fights off many infections and boosts immunity. In winter the sun exposure to the skin is very low which results in a favorable condition for bacterial and fungal infections.

The sudden shift in the temperature comes as a shock to the delicate skin. It adds to the stress of skin of people who are chronic sufferers of skin problems thus triggering further damage to the skin.

  • Mild exfoliation to remove the dirt and clean the clogged up pores. It can be done once in a week as too much scrubbing might lead to further damage to the skin.

  • Avoid products with fragrance, makeup containing harsh chemicals as they tend to irritate the skin. Keep the hair clean and avoid oily and greasy hair products as they can trigger the acne.
  • Avoid touching your face frequently as it can come in contact with bacteria and dirt which can lead to acne. Wash your hands frequently as it can transfer the dust and dirt on to the face, especially before applying creams, makeup, etc.
  • Though tempting and pleasant, avoid long, hot showers, too much heating of indoors, over-washing as they all rob the moisture from the face. Instead try to get as much as sunlight as possible. Use a mild sunscreen when going out in sunlight.
