Acidity, flatulence and indigestion are interlinked. Hypersecretion of gastric fluid (hydrochloric acid) may lead to dyspepsia, gastro esophageal reflex disease, bilious vomiting and if not treated then to peptic ulcer.  Factors which effect hypersecretion are spicy food, irritant drinks, mental or psychological factors like anxiety, overwork and stress. Some genetic and structural abnormalities also cause these problems.  As a result of elevated acidity, the digestive mechanism is disturbed.  Some of the acids normally pass to lower areas effecting their pH, and consequent indigestion, flatulence and colic.  Gastric disturbances in many cases are associated with headache which is also considering during treatment.

Symptoms

Commonly observed symptoms out of the above mechanism include:

  • Heartburn
  • Bloating of abdomen
  • Heaviness in the abdomen
  • Sour eructation
  • Flatulence
  • Colic
  • Headache

Dos and don’ts

The patients should be advised to eliminate or lower alcohol, spices, tea, coffee, and enhance cold milk, bland cereals, and non-citrus fruits.  Change in outlook and style of functioning, to eliminate or lower mental stress and tension, may greatly help to overcome these problems.
