Excrescence comes from Latin word excrescere, which means to grow out from (i.e., ex- means out and crescere means to grow). It includes both the normal outgrowths from the body, e.g natural appendages like hair, fingernail and the abnormal outgrowths or additions from the body e.g., warts, acne, etc. Although in routine medical parlance, it refers to disfiguring and abnormal outgrowths from the human body.
This mainly occurs when cells of the skin or underlying tissue proliferate. These growths may be congenital i.e., present since birth or may develop later. They may vary in color from dark brown, black, skin color to even red. Also, they are found to be either raised or flat. These growths are benign or noncancerous. But when these cells intrude surrounding healthy tissues and even invade other parts of the body, these growths are called cancerous and can be dangerous. Fortunately, most skin growths are benign and, more often, a cosmetic problem than anything considerable.

CAUSES OF EXCRESCENCE

Most of these noncancerous growths do not have a known cause. However, some growths are known to be caused by the following:-
Viruses (e.g., warts)
Systemic disease (e.g., xanthelasmas caused by an excess of fats in the blood)
Genetic (e.g., seborrheic keratosis)
Environmental factors (e.g., moles due to sunlight)

TYPES OF EXCRESCENCES

Mostly excrescences are noncancerous and more of a cosmetic concern than anything else. Some of the typical excrescences are:-
Verruca Vulgaris- Also called common wart, is caused by human papillomavirus. It can develop on the skin, anywhere in the body. It is often found on the skin at the nail’s base and thus spreads due to nail-biting.
Cutaneous Cyst- It is common and slowly growing lumps. The most common cutaneous cysts are epidermal inclusion cyst or epidermoid cyst. It is flesh-colored, up to 2inches in size across, have enlarged pore, and contain a cheesy, bad-smelling substance made up of skin secretions. It develops anywhere in the body, but most commonly on the head, back and neck. It is firm and can be moved easily within the skin.
Milia- It is a tiny, superficial variety of epidermal inclusion cyst that is found most commonly on the face and scalp.
Keloids- It is shiny, light pink or darkened, smooth and firm overgrowth of scar tissue commonly found on areas of surgical wounds, injury, or even acne. It commonly develops in dark-skinned people on shoulders, upper back, mid-chest and at time son face and earlobes.
Lipoma- It is round or oval, soft bump due to the deposit of fat that grows beneath the skin. It is very common and rarely grows more than 3 inches across. It develops commonly on forearms, neck and torso.

DIAGNOSIS OF EXCRESCENCE

Most of the time, the doctor can identify growth by skin examination. Some growths undergo biopsy for examination under a microscope. For other growths, specific tests may be done based on growth.

HOMEOPATHY FOR EXCRESCENCES

Treatment of growth depends mainly on the type of growth. Some excrescences don’t require treatment and go away sooner or later on their own. Noncancerous excrescences that are bothersome but do not go away by themselves need treatment. In allopathy, external methods like an application of salicylic acid peels, liquid nitrogen or laser treatment and minor surgery are done to remove the excrescences. These methods cause side effects like burning and stinging of affected parts and may even leave scars in the area treated. Also, for excrescences such as warts which are caused by viruses, such localized treatment doesn’t strengthen the immune system to avoid the recurrence of warts.

On the other hand, Homeopathic treatment for excrescences is effective and without any side effects. It is based on prescribing internal medications that not only help to remove the growths present but also eliminates the tendency to develop such growths in the future as well. In certain cancerous or noncancerous growths like keloids, which cannot be removed with internal medications, homeopathy still has a vital role to play. In such cases, homeopathic medicine helps by giving symptomatic relief to the patient and prevents the recurrence of those excrescences that have already been removed using various external means. Best homeopathic medicine for excrescences is the one most similar to disease manifestation. For this, a trained homeopathic physician elicits symptoms from both mental and physical spheres in each case.

Common excrescences medicines in homeopathy are:-
