Gastritis or inflammation of the mucous membrane of the stomach may be acute or chronic.
The cause may be irritation due to excessive alcohol, stress, frequent vomiting, or due to side effects of certain medicines such as the common aspirin or anti-inflammatory and other drugs. Other causes include H. pylori infection, bile reflux, certain cases of pernicious anemia, other (than H. pylori) infections by some bacteria and viruses.
SYMPTOMS
Prior to gastritis usually people get some other gastric symptoms such as:
(a) Flatulence and eructation
(b) Heart-burn
(c) Water-brash or pyrosis which is the regurgitation of watery fluid into the mouth.
(d) Hiccups
(e) Loss of appetite
(f) Black, tarry stools
