Gastric ulcer
Peptic ulcer is divided into two types; gastric ulcer and duodenal ulcer. Ulcer in stomach is known as gastric ulcer and ulcer in upper part of intestine is known as duodenal ulcer. They are usually found in the lining of the stomach, esophagus, or upper small intestine.
Cause
Peptic ulcer is caused by Helicobacter pylori. There are so many influencing factors which include stress, age, sex, diet habits, etc. to cause high risk of peptic ulcer. Women and older people are more likely to develop these ulcers. Young men are more likely to experience duodenal ulcers, while older women have more gastric ulcers. Consumption of alcohol, tobacco, caffeine and aspirin also increase the risk.
Symptoms
Symptoms of ulcer are gnawing or burning pain in the middle or upper stomach between meals or at night, heartburn, bloating of abdomen, nausea, vomiting, gradual weight loss, dark stool, blood vomiting in advanced stage, etc.
Management and prevention
It can be managed by washing the hands before meal, limiting the usage of ibuprofen, aspirin, and naproxen sodium, maintaining a healthy lifestyle through a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole grains, quitting consumption of alcohol and smoking.
