Dysentery
Dysentery is discharge of blood or mucous or both with stool due to inflammation of intestine. There are two types of dysentery viz bacillary and amoebic. Both types of dysentery are highly infectious and can be passed on if the microorganisms of an infected person gets into another person’s mouth. This can happen if someone with the infection doesn’t wash their hands after going to the toilet and then touches food, surfaces, or another person.
Cause
Bacillary dysentery caused by shigella bacteria and amoebic dysentery is caused by Entamoeba histolytica.
Symptoms
Loose stool with mucous or blood or both. Other symptoms may include fever, abdominal pain, and rectal tenesmus, nausea, vomiting, and fatigue.
Management
Use only sterile water; if it is not available boil it for several minutes or use chemical disinfectant or a reliable filter. Avoid fresh fruit or vegetables that can’t be peeled before eating. Avoid food and drink sold by unhygienic vendors.
