It is not uncommon to hear people saying, my nerves are weak, or I have nervous weakness. Medically, though, it is important to demarcate the actual meaning behind these terms. Generally, when people say they have weak nerves they mean to say that they are easily affected by adverse circumstances, are highly sensitive, and suffer greatly from seemingly small health issues and difficulties. Nervous weakness can also however mean true nerve affections, a delay in nerve conduction, disordered nervous system, or nerve pains such as sciatica. Thus, it is evident how a single term can have multiple meanings and different manifestations attached to each. This is yet another reason why homeopathy is a better system of medicine; it focusses primarily on signs and symptoms and only secondarily on diagnostic terms. Indeed, nerve weakness is a common phenomenon and is treatable by homeopathy.

Nerve weakness may be associated with muscle weakness. Since muscles act solely via their nerve supply it is common to see impaired functioning of a muscle and even wasting when the nerve supplying it gets affected. For example, when the spinal accessory nerve is paralyzed, the trapezius muscle is affected and ‘winging’ of scapula occurs. Similarly, compression of median nerve in the wrist causes carpal tunnel syndrome, characterized by pain, numbness and tingling in the fingers. Therefore, weakness, paralysis or palsy of any nerve will cause weakness and loss of function in the muscle supplied by it (unless the muscle has supply from other nerves also, in which case specific areas may be affected).

Many people have a lower threshold for coping with stressful circumstances and develop some sort of morbid symptoms in case of stress. Often, anticipation or apprehension about an event or act causes indigestion and even diarrhea. This is called nervous indigestion. It is common to feel discomfort in the abdomen before a major event, for example as students feel before exams. This condition is sometimes exaggerated to the extent of diarrhea, indigestion, nausea and vomiting and pain abdomen in some susceptible people. This is a nervous symptom as it arises out of apprehensions and anxiety, both mental symptoms that lead to physical problems. Such inexplicable and yet highly common phenomena can be cured by homeopathy.

Nerve pains may also be frequently encountered. Usually they occur due to nerve compression either by a space occupying lesion or by some bone or other body tissue. The most common example is the sciatic pain that occurs due to the sciatic nerve (a long nerve in the leg) being compressed by the spinal cord due to disc prolapse or some other condition. Such pains are sharp shooting pains that feel like lightning and run from the hips down to the legs. They are highly distressing and cause severe disability. Simple tasks like walking and even lying down may be cumbersome. Homeopathy has shown excellent results in the management of such nerve pains. Not only that, but the actual cause underlying the nerve pain can also be favorably managed by homeopathy.

Nervous weakness or nerve disorder (neuropathy) is also frequently seen in diabetes mellitus at advanced stages. This generally occurs when sugar levels remain persistently high and the disease is poorly controlled. Tingling, numbness and pins and needles sensation occur in the nerves specially in the distal parts like fingers, legs, etc. This progresses to numbness which is almost constant. Such a state is called peripheral neuropathy. This is a dangerous condition for the diabetic patient as loss of sensation in the extremities makes the patient ignorant of any injury or wound occurring in the legs, and bacteria find the glucose laden tissues to be a highly suitable environment for growth. Thus, the wound gets infected and may even deteriorate to necrosis. Diabetic wounds and ulcers are very hard to treat. The ulcers become chronic and in worst cases gangrene may set in.

Peripheral neuropathy is also seen in people who are deficient in vitamin B12. It is a routine practice to advise investigations for vitamin B12 levels in blood when a patient complains of nerve problems. For such patients a diet rich in fish, meat, eggs and dairy products is advised.

Homeopathy medicine for nerve weakness helps to not only manage the problems arising out of weak nerves but it also acts as a nerve tonic to provide strength. Schwabe India manufactures the best medicine for nerve weakness strictly according to homeopathic principles. The most effective and promptly acting homeopathic medicine for weak nerves is the tissue remedy Kali Phos. This medicine of nerve weakness is a tissue remedy and comes in tablet forms as 3x, 6x, 12x, and so on. Kali phosphoricum tablets are excellent nerve weakness tablets which help in strengthening weak muscles and nerves. For chronic nerve weakness treatment must be continued patiently for some time. This will help tone up the nerves and provide longer lasting results.
