Itching
Itching is medically known as pruritus. It is uncomfortable irritation in the skin with urge to scratch. It can be generalized or local. Itches can also occur with or without skin lesions like bumps, blisters, rash, redness, or other abnormalities that can be seen on the skin.
Cause
Itching can be due to internal or external cause. External cause can be eczema, psoriasis, ringworm, fungal infection, mites, measles, chicken pox, lice, dermatitis, scabies, irritant, etc. Internal cause can be of serious types like hepatitis, jaundice, liver disease, kidney failure, leukemia, multiple sclerosis, diabetes, food allergy, reaction to any medication, etc.
Home care or prevention
Scratching should be prevented. Patient must keep their fingernails short to avoid damage from scratching. Cool light clothes should be worn. Avoid using detergent and soap. Bath with baking soda or oatmeal is recommended to sooth the skin. If itching is from dryness of skin creams like B&T Calendula and Aloe vera multipurpose cream are recommended.
