Agnus castus was proved by Dr. Hahnemann and covered by TF Allen, AL Blackwood, W. Boericke, JH Clarke, C. Hering, etc. Its main sphere of action is sexual organs, both male and female. To re-establish its proving in the present generation, Dr. Willmar Schwabe Group had conducted a proving in association with Dr. David Riley which was published recently. The drug was proved in 12CH with 12 female provers. It was a placebo controlled pathogenetic trial to re-establish its curative efficacy in homoeopathic doses. There are many symptoms associated with alternations of the menstrual cycle, which were observed during this proving. They included uterine cramping and copious menstrual flow, mood alteration causing sadness, irritability, despair, and weeping, breast swelling and tenderness, bloating and distension of the abdominal area that affected both the uterine and intestinal systems. A complete materia medica combining this new as well as old provings are given below.
Distracted, with loss of memory, inability to fix the attention, sadness; thinks to die soon, puerperal mania, anger, alternating with weeping; biting nails; averse to company before menses; concentration difficult; delusions, mind and body are separated, she is odd-looking and unattractive; despair; as if in a dream. Sexual melancholy. Fear of death. Sadness with impression of speedy death. Absentminded, forgetful, lack of courage. Illusion of smell - herrings, musk. Nervous depression and mental forebodings. Dreams, amorous, of angry quarrels, that breasts appear bruised, nightmarish, prophetic; dullness during menses; disturbed emotions before menses; fearful before menses; forsaken and isolated feeling; indifference. Irritability, irritability before menses, reproaches self. Sadness before menses; sensitive before the menses; desire for sympathy; amorous thoughts; tranquil. Weeping, before menses; during menses, causeless.
Vertigo with headache and dim sight before menses. Dizziness on moving the head quickly; particularly when lying in bed.
Tearing pains to head, face and teeth. Itching of scalp when going to sleep. Pain, headache amel. looking fixedly at anything. Tension and chilliness in scalp, which is warm to the touch. Constriction like a band or hoop. Drawing, tightening; pain localized in the forehead, in the forehead extending to the occiput; right-sided; pressing pain on waking.
Pupils dilated. [Bell.]. Itching about eyes; photophobia. Gnawing itching over and on the eyebrows, on the eyelids and under the eyes. Twitching, left-sided.
Hysterical palpitation with nose bleed. Aching in the dorsum of the nose better by pressure. Discharge and sneezing in the morning.
Over-running, burning, most in face, with cold knees in evening in bed, sweat. Flushes of burning heat, principally in the face. Eczematous eruptions; premenstrual eruptions; pimples; tingling in forehead and nose, numbness in cheek and forehead; heat in the morning.
Metallic, coppery taste in the mouth. Ulcers in the mouth and on the gums. Aphthae on lips; numbness of lips; stitching pain under the tongue.
Corrosive itching on eyebrows and lids and beneath eyes; on cheeks; in pit of throat; of perineum. Sensation as if tenacious mucus is lodged in the throat and cannot be expectorated. Inflammation with pain of the tonsils; pain on swallowing; swelling of the tonsils.
Cracking noise in vertebrae. Acute sharp stitches in coccyx; on left side near coccyx and sacrum. Swelling of left-side cervical glands.
Pinching in pit when sitting bent over. Nausea in pit of stomach when standing; later in the abdomen, with a sensation as if the intestines were pressing downwards; constant inclination to support bowels with the hands. Nausea; insatiable appetite; burning pain after waking; thirst during menses; bitter vomiting.
Sensation as if all the intestines were sinking downward. Ascites. Distension, after eating, during the menses; flatulence; hardness after eating. Pain, burning, cramping, cramping of the colon; cramping with diarrhea, cramping of the hypogastrium; lancinating on the right side, dull and pressing, throbbing. Abdomen sore to touch.
Stitches in the rectum. Wind expelled by rectum smells like urine remaining long on clothes. Loose stool, some days in succession. The stools are more loose than usual, with dull pain in the abdomen. Several diarrhoeic stools. Difficulty in passing the stools, which were not hard; they had to be pressed out and seemed inclined to re-enter the rectum. Constipation; offensive flatus; relaxed anus; urging for stool suddenly.
Transparent leucorrhoea, staining linen yellow. It passes imperceptibly perceptibly from the very relaxed part. Leucorrhoea is like white of egg. Deficient secretion or suppression of milk in nursing women. Women who indulged extensively in secret vice. After marriage she founds no sexual thrill. She became pregnant, but no milk came in her mamma or ceases or becomes scanty after it has been started. Agnus cures suppressed menses and uterine haemorrhage in young women with a history of sexual excess. Coldness of the vagina; uterine contractions like a pulling sensation; vaginal dryness; vaginal itching; leucorrhoea, between the menses, offensive, stringy; menses copious, clotted, copious with large clots; delayed onset of menses; menses stops and restarts (menses intermittent); sour, pungent offensive menstrual flow; dysmenorrhoea; menses flow shorter than usual; aching of uterus and vagina; burning of the labia; uterine cramping [cured symptom], especially during the menses, also before the menses; ovarian pain at ovulation, and during urination; stitching pain in labia; sense of prolapse of the uterus; increased sexual desire. Painful sore breasts, especially before the onset of menstruation. Right- and left-sided soreness, swelling of the breasts; awakes after midnight with rapid heartbeat and shortness of breath.
Retention of the urine from paralysis of the bladder. Cold, contracted feeling with pain on urination. Dark yellow urine. Frequent micturitions.
Oppression on going up-stairs. Dyspnoea; worse in evening. Difficult after exertion.
A creaking noise in vertebrae. Acute, sharp stitches in coccyx, and on left side near coccyx and sacrum. Pain in sacrum from flatus. Pain, with constriction in the sacrum, in the lumbar region extending to the thighs; with a soreness of the sacral region, especially while sitting; tearing pain in the sacrum while sitting.
Sprains, bad results from lifting too much. Inflammatory swelling of joints. Sprained swollen limbs, especially at ankle joints. Gouty nodes on joints. Arthritic nodes develop, especially on the toes; legs heavy. General internal coldness, with trembling. Cold hands; cold knees, even in bed. Awkwardness; red eruptions on the thigh; stiffness of the fingers and joints. Aching of the elbow; aching joints; generalized neuralgic pain; in the groin; tearing in the hip while sitting; tearing in the joints.
Weak and slow, often imperceptible. Internal with trembling, while external skin is warm. Alternating with heat. Much shivering with cold hands. Chilliness without thirst predominates. Alternating with perspiration.
Yellow tint of the skin. Chilliness, internal with trembling, the external skin is warm. Red, blotchy eruptions; eczematous eruptions; itchy, hard, inflamed pimples.
Somnolency. Restless at night. Rumbling of flatulence during sleep. Deep sleep. Unrefreshing sleep. Waking from dreams and waking with the sensation of chest palpitations.
Great debility. Feet turn under when walking. Desire for open air in the morning; desires sugar; sensation of heat; influenza-like feeling; faintness; motion aggravates; rubbing aggravates; weakness, before eating, before menses, with nausea; weariness, during the menses, in the morning.
