Introduction
A cough is a sudden noisy expulsion of air from the lungs as part of a defence mechanism to remove unwanted materials. It may occur as a result of a reflex action caused by irritation of any part of the respiratory mucous membranes. The cough may be dry, productive (loose) or spasmodic in nature.
A dry cough occurs when the mucous membranes of throat, larynx, or bronchi are affected by viral respiratory infections or irritation by tobacco smoke or pollution. In cases of bacterial complications, chronic diseases of the respiratory tract or after prolonged immobilisation, the cough may develop a productive character. Alpha-Coff Syrup is useful in the treatment of upper respiratory tract infections, congestion of the chest, and acute and chronic bronchitis. The cough is persistent and irritating, spasmodic and suffocating in nature. It also soothes the sore throat, and tickling sensation and reduces mucous secretions. The cough is associated with nausea and vomiting.
The syrup has to be taken 1-2 teaspoons every three hours in adults and half of the dose in children. Then subsequently the frequency of dose should be reduced as the improvement starts or as prescribed by the physician.
The syrup is specially formulated for cough and related symptoms and contains important remedies like Rumex crispus, Justicia adhatoda, Ipecacuanha, Spongia tosta, Sticta pulmonaria, Antimonium tartaricum, Coccus cacti, Drosera rotundifolia and Senega. Rumex crispus is indicated in a cough caused by incessant tickling in the back of the throat. The cough is dry, teasing, aggravated by pressure, talking and inspiring cold air and at night. The expectoration is stringy and tough. Justicia adhatoda is a medicine for acute catarrhal conditions of the respiratory tract and suffocative attacks with obstruction of respiration. Coryza with cough, hoarseness, paroxysmal with dyspnoea, asthma and whooping cough. Ipecacuanha reduces spasmodic irritation of the chest. It is useful in cases of dyspnoea, chest pain, incessant and violent cough, rattling and attacks of spasmodic and suffocative cough with nausea. Persistent nausea and vomiting with cough. Spongia tosta acts on respiratory organs. There is great dryness of all air passages. Cough, dry, barking, croupy and larynx is sensitive to touch. Chest is weak and can scarcely talk. Hoarseness, dryness of larynx and difficult respiration. Sticta pulmonaria is indicated for coryza, bronchial catarrh and influenza. The throat is sore, raw, dripping with mucous from posterior nares and the cough is dry hacking mostly at night. It is also indicated in tracheitis. It facilitates the expectoration. Antimonium tartaricum covers hoarseness, a burning sensation in the chest, and rattling of mucous with little expectoration. The respiration is short, rapid and difficult. The bronchial tubes are overloaded with mucus. Cough is excited by eating and followed by vomiting. Pain in the chest and larynx with coarse rattling with scanty expectoration. Coccus cacti are indicated for spasmodic and whooping cough, coryza and accumulation of thick mucus which is difficult to expectorate. There is tickling in the larynx and suffocative cough such as in chronic bronchitis. Whooping cough attacks end in vomiting of tough mucus. Drosera rotundifolia is a known remedy for whooping cough which is dry irritating aggravated by talking. The cough is paroxysmal, rapidly choking and retching. The throat is rough with hoarseness of voice. The voice is deep, and hoarse and rough scraping sensation in the throat. Balsam tolu is used for chronic bronchitis with profuse expectoration with loud rales in the chest. The cough is irritating with scanty loose expectoration. Senega is indicated in catarrhal symptoms of the respiratory tract. The voice is hoarse leading to temporary loss of voice, backache on coughing, oppression in the chest and rattling in the chest. It is indicated in bronchitis with the difficulty in raising mucous and chronic emphysema.
