The terms eczema refers to a distinctive reaction pattern of the skin showing a combination of signs, which depends on the duration of the rash and the type of eczema.  The reaction is similar in all types but varies according to the duration of the rash.  The signs of acute eczema and chronic eczema are different.

Cause

According to the recent reports, combination of hereditary and environmental factors lead to the condition. Environmental factors may also aggravate the symptoms of eczema. These include:

  • Irritants: soaps, detergents, shampoos, disinfectants, juices from fresh fruits, meats or vegetables
  • Allergens: dust mites, pets, pollens, mould
  • Microbes: bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, viruses, certain fungi like candida
  • Hot and cold temperatures: hot weather, high or low humidity, perspiration from exercise
  • Foods: dairy products, eggs, nuts and seeds, soya products, wheat
  • Stress: it may trigger or worsen the symptoms
  • Hormones: women can experience worsening of eczema symptoms at times when their hormone levels are changing, for example during pregnancy and at certain points in their menstrual cycle

Signs and Symptoms

Initially the skin may be dry and itchy. Then it becomes red, swollen and sore. In some cases a think, transparent fluid may ooze. It may lead to crust formation and scaling. Elbows, behind the knees, cheeks, and buttocks are the common locations.

General management

Regular bathing using soaps like B&T Skin Care Bathing Bar is important to cleanse and hydrate the skin. Detergents should be avoided as these remove the natural lipid from the skin.  Suitable bath oils should be used to maintain skin hydration.  Emollients may be applied liberally to the whole body at least twice daily, especially after bathing, and more frequently throughout the day to hands and face.
